Tasmanian Devils face a severe threat to their natural population in Tasmania from a cancerous disease DFTD. As part of a shared programme with Australia, Auckland Zoo developed a Tassie Devil exhibit to display these unusual critters, whilst protecting and isolating disease free gene pools from their native Tasmania. Studio Hansen Roberts Landscape architects developed the concept design, Logan Brewer Design detailed the exhibit and Thorburn Consultants (NZ) Ltd carried out the structural, civil and environmental engineering. The subsoil conditions were challenging with a mix of shallow basalt rock through to deep layers of alluvial and uncontrolled historic fill. In addition, a high water table complicated works in excavated foundations. Civil works included bulk and detailed earthworks, provision of three waters services plus ‘third pipe’ non-potable supply and retaining works
