Tasmanian Devils

Tasmanian Devils face a severe threat to their natural population in Tasmania from a cancerous disease DFTD. As part of a shared programme with Australia, Auckland Zoo developed a Tassie Devil exhibit to display these unusual critters, whilst protecting and isolating disease free gene pools from their native Tasmania. Studio Hansen Roberts Landscape architects developed the concept design, Logan Brewer Design detailed the exhibit and Thorburn Consultants (NZ) Ltd carried out the structural, civil and environmental engineering. Built by Hawkins.

Environmental design by Thorburn Consultants (NZ) Ltd included artificial stream design and filtration with H2O Engineering providing a design-build role for the sterilisation of the feature. Thorburn provided environmental impact assessment including overland flow path and stormwater watershed analysis.
